Unsolvable situation for Hamilton: 'We just couldn't find a way'

Mercedes hoped to find its way back to the front after the strong Grand Prix in Barcelona, but did not manage to continue the good line in Monaco. Andrew Shovlin was therefore dissatisfied with the final result after the race.
During the free practices, it already became clear that Mercedes would have a hard time. Where George Russell could be content with a fifth place, behind the Ferrari- and Red Bull Racing-drivers, it was different for Lewis Hamilton. He had to settle for eighth place.
"It's been a frustrating weekend for the team and drivers," Shovlin said in a Mercedes press release. "We weren't anywhere near quick enough on one lap but even in the race we didn't have enough pace. George did a good job to take P5 from Lando on the dry transition and also to hold him behind at the end of the race."
Hamilton couldn't get away from eighth place
For Hamilton, the situation was different. "Lewis had a tough time sandwiched between the Alpines for most of the race - we just couldn't find a way of putting him in free air without him needing to overtake which is near impossible."
