Sergio Perez became the first Mexican to win the Monaco Grand Prix in a weekend that was full of sporting spectacle for Mexicans. Patricio O'Ward finished second in the Indy500 and the national soccer championship also played. Perez's win leads the way.
Mexican media call Perez win historic
Perez is the second Mexican F1 race winner. Perdro Rodriguez won a Grand Prix in 1967 and in 1970, but never before has a Mexican won the jewel of the calendar; the Monaco GP. The Mexican media is widely applauding the Red Bull Racing driver for his historic win. Thus headlines Cronica "Historic: Perez looks formidable and triumphs in Monte Carlo". Dario de Mexico celebrates for Ferrari's rejected protests and put the Mexican on the front page of the printed newspaper.
El Sol de Mexico also reflect on how special Perez's victory in Monaco is. The newspaper comes up with the witty title, "From not having a recording of the national anthem to a live band playing it in Monaco." Indeed, in South Africa after Rodriguez's 1967 win, the national anthem could not be heard because there was no recording of it.
Busy sports weekend in Mexico
The newspaper El Universal even highlighted a congratulatory message from the government of Mexico to Perez. In other Mexican newspapers such as Vanguardia and Jornada, the news of Perez's victory was mostly overshadowed by the championship of the Atlas soccer team from Guadalajara, coincidentally enough Checo's hometown. The team won the national championship for the second year in a row after not being champions for seventy years.
The third major Mexican sports news was Pato O'ward's P2 in the Indy500. Rinus van Kalmthout also entered the race and was a contender for the win, but crashed hard on lap 39. Former F1 driver Marcus Ericsson walked away with the win and former Red Bull junior and Mexican O'Ward went for a neat P2.
