Tsunoda addresses Red Bull situation after Perez contract extension
- GPblog.com
Yuki Tsunoda is in his second season at AlphaTauri. Because of Sergio Perez's contract extension, the Japanese driver knows that he will not be able to switch to Red Bull Racing for the next two seasons. This is not a bad thing for him, because he feels that he is not yet learned at his current team.
Whereas last season Pierre Gasly performed a lot better than Tsunoda, after seven races in 2022 the proportions are reversed for the time being. Tsunoda finished in the top ten three times and is in twelfth place in the world championship with eleven points, while Gasly has six points to his name.
Tsunoda wants to build career quietly
However, it does not mean yet that Tsunoda feels he is ready for a big team. The driver believes that it is important to build a good foundation and therefore thinks it is wise to continue driving at AlphaTauri for another period. He uses George Russell as an example for this, as he tells in an interview with the English Express.
"He was in Williams quite a long time and he was able to perform straight away when he jumped to Mercedes," Tsunoda analyzes the situation. "I think I can learn a lot of things still, for example to maximise the performance as much as possible, even when the car is not having the potential to score points."
