Gasly to Aston Martin? 'Should be making inquiries already'

Pierre Gasly 's future is far from certain. The AlphaTauri driver has already had the first conversation with Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko in Azerbaijan. According to Johnny Herbert, the most logical step is to leave the Red Bull family.
Silly Season in 2022
Gasly will be a key player in the F1 Silly Season in 2022. Only problem for the Frenchman is that he is dependent on what other drivers do. Red Bull and Ferrari both have drivers under contract for next year and the same goes for Mercedes and McLaren. In addition, Alpine seems to be happy with Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon, especially now that the French are likely to be able to stall Oscar Piastri at Williams for two years.
With that, the chance of a step up for Gasly is very small. For that to happen, Lewis Hamilton would have to stop racing or McLaren and Daniel Ricciardo would have to put an early end to their marriage. This is possible, but the chances are not very high. Still, Herbert thinks Gasly should leave Red Bull.
Aston Martin a logical choice
"I think he's gotta do what Daniel [Ricciardo] did; break away," says the three-time GP winner in the F1 Nation podcast. The most logical move, according to Herbert, is Aston Martin. "I think he should be straight there already making inquiries for exactly what they wanna do and say 'Yeah, I'm ready and I'm willing to come onboard'"
Herbert thinks Sebastian Vettel would still re-sign and therefore it is Lance Stroll who should be sidelined. Stroll is not yet putting in the results he hoped for in 2022. "I think Lawrence has gotta go 'Son, I've given you a chance, it isn't quite working out, and I've got to do what's right for the team.'" Herbert concludes.
