After the first few races of the season, it didn't look like Mercedes could fight for wins this season. Now that the summer break is over, the reigning world champions can say that they have succeeded. In Hungary, George Russell took pole position and in the race, Lewis Hamilton also secured two podiums.

Top man Andrew Shovlin is therefore very pleased with the developments the team has made in recent months, he explained in the debrief on the Youtube channel of Mercedes. "We've had a lot of ground to make up from the start of the year. We've been working really hard trying to bring bits to every race and it is really satisfying now to see that we're racing with the Ferrari's with the Red Bulls right at the front."

Can Mercedes win at Spa?

Still, they are not completely satisfied at Mercedes. Victories have not yet been recorded this season and in the race, they are normally a long way behind the teams of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. According to Shovlin, however, this is only a matter of time and new updates will already be in place at Spa.

"We're trying to bring some performance to Spa that will hopefully close that gap. We haven't got far to go now but we'll keep developing the car for a little while now." Whether Mercedes can actually make up the gap remains to be seen, as Red Bull and Ferrari will both be working hard to gain performance heading into the second half of the season.
