Daniel Ricciardo will start on pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix after leaving his rivals chasing. The Australian set an incredible 1:10.810 to put his Red Bull firmly on pole, one of the most important of the season.
Q1 was the usual high traffic affair with drivers trying to find the space to set a lap. Valtteri Bottas was the big name in danger going into the final five minutes but set a very good lap that saw him through. Max Verstappen’s FP3 crash and subsequent gearbox change will mean he starts last.
Charles Leclerc and Sergey Sirotkin fought their way out of Q1 with superb laps that saw them comfortably through into the next session.
Their pace wasn’t good enough to get through into the final shootout however. Mercedes had gambled on ultrasofts over the hypersofts but they weren’t quick enough and had to bail onto the hypersoft tyres to get them through into Q3 safely. Ricciardo topped the times once again heading into the all-important final shootout.
Round one in Q3 went to Ricciardo again, a 1:10.8 put him almost half a second clear of anybody. In behind, Lewis Hamilton was second after both Ferrari’s made small errors on their laps.
Sebastian Vettel was the only one to improve on his second run, managing to put his Ferrari onto the front row at Hamilton's expense, who himself will start from P3. Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas were unable to improve and will start fourth and fifth respectively.
