The second free practice session was dominated by Pirelli's tyre test. Charles Leclerc recorded the fastest time, but that was on current tyres. Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo completed the top three in Austin.
FP2 lasted an hour and a half because of the Pirelli test. The drivers were obliged to test the new 2023 tyres according to a Pirelli schedule. Therefore, nothing was allowed to change the car's set-up either. Carlos Sainz recorded the fastest time on the new tyres in P4.
Leclerc finished on top, but that was on the 2022 tyres. The Monegasque did not come into action in FP1 as rookie Robert Schwartzman took the wheel of his Ferrari. This allowed Leclerc to drive freely for half an hour in FP2 on the current tyres. Ricciardo and Bottas also got that chance after missing the first practice session. Consequently, the top three remained unchanged for the rest of the session. Max Verstappen finished the tyre test after more than an hour, posting the seventh-fastest time.
