Pierre Gasly has received penalty points on his licence for the third race in a row. For his incident with Lance Stroll, the AlphaTauri driver has gained one more point, bringing his total to 10 points. At 12 points, a driver is suspended for a race weekend.

Early in the Mexican Grand Prix, Gasly and Stroll got into an argument. Competing for 15th, Gasly steered tightly into Stroll, forcing the Aston Martin driver to leave the track. For this action, Gasly received a five-second time penalty and one penalty point on his licence. A week earlier in Austin, Gasly already got two penalty points for falling too far behind the car in front of him under the safety car, and the race before that in Japan he also got two for driving too fast under the safety car.

The penalty points remain for 12 months. Thus, if a driver achieves 12 points in that period, a driver is excluded from a race weekend. This penalty has never been handed out before, but Gasly is starting to get very close by now. The Frenchman also has to keep a low profile for a while: his first points will not expire until 22 May 2023 meaning he will have to complete nine races.

Gasly has the most penalty points of anyone

Gasly leads the penalty points list convincingly. In second place is his teammate Yuki Tsunoda with eight points, but four of them will expire before the end of this calendar year. Alexander Albon rounds off the top three with seven points. Like Gasly, he will have to wait until next season before losing points again. The rest of the grid follows behind. The only two drivers who currently have no penalty points are Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton.
