Lando Norris is still one of the most promising youngsters on the Formula 1 grid. That is why McLaren wanted to have the Englishman under contract for many more years. That there was competition is now well known thanks to Norris himself. Earlier, he said he had spoken to Red Bull Racing several times in the past.

Now Red Bull also confirms that there have been several talks with Norris about a possible contract. Team boss Christian Horner tells Motorsportweek that there had been several talks with Red Bull. “We’ve spoken with Lando a couple of times over the years,” he said."Every time we’ve had a conversation, the next day he’s signed a contract with McLaren."

Higher salary

For the next few years, a contract with Red Bull seems not realistic. First of all, Sergio Perez is signed by the team until 2024. Moreover, from a financial point of view, it seems unrealistic for Red Bull to have both Verstappen and Norris. At McLaren, Norris reportedly earns around $20 million. That's a lot more than Perez would earn (source: Sportrac.com). In addition, Verstappen is among the big earners in the sport.

So McLaren does not need to worry that Red Bull will try to persuade Norris to come to Red Bull. “He’s on a long-term contract with McLaren and looks like he’s going to be there for a few more years.” Horner also said.
