Norris would have preferred different strategy: 'It worked out well for Daniel'

In the Mexican Grand Prix, McLaren managed to reduce the gap to Alpine by four points. According to Lando Norris, Alpine still has a faster car, but his own team executed the Formula 1 weekend better. Still, he thinks the strategy on his side of the garage could have been better.
Norris analyses GP Mexico
Norris started the race from eighth place, but lost positions on the first lap to Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso. Alonso's retirement allowed him to gain a place, but nevertheless, Norris finished behind his teammate Daniel Ricciardo this time.
The McLaren driver is happy with his team's double points finish, as well as the fact that the gap to Alpine has narrowed after last weekend. This is despite the fact that, according to Norris, the rival team still has a faster car. "We did a good job. I don’t think we had the quicker cars today than the Alpine but once again as a team we did a better job," he told Formula1.com.
Norris further explained that he would have preferred to be on a different strategy, but he understands why McLaren chose to keep Ricciardo out. The team had to cover Yuki Tsunoda's pit stop and in doing so put Norris on the hard tyre, while Ricciardo stayed out for an extremely long time before eventually changing to the softs.
Norris reveals that McLaren always planned to put one driver on that favourable strategy. "Daniel was in a lucky position that he could just stay out and do anything he wanted, which in other races I’ve been able to do," says the Briton. That strategy worked out favourably. "We had that plan from the beginning, if someone was in that position, and Daniel was that guy and so he made up for it and made the most of it. He did a good job," Norris concluded.
