Guenther Steiner is again thoroughly enjoying Max Verstappen this season. The Dutchman secured his fourteenth win of the season in Mexico, taking the record away from Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. According to the Italian, Formula 1 is therefore dealing with a new greatness, he told RTL Deutschland.
The Haas F1 team boss compares Verstappen to Schumacher. Whereas the German won the world title no fewer than seven times, he thinks Verstappen is well on his way. "Every period has its champion. In this period, it's just Max," he judges.
Verstappen struggled at the beginning of the season due to two stoppages. However, he then managed to bring order and take the lead in the world championship. "He has the talent and the drive. He is just a champion at the moment."
Steiner compares Leclerc to Verstappen
During the start of the season, it looked like Leclerc could fight along for the world title, but the Monegasque did not last long. Only in Bahrain, Australia and Austria did the driver manage to emerge victorious.
Steiner notes that there is a difference between the qualities of Leclerc and Verstappen. He considers the latter driver a bit further along in his career. "I think Leclerc is a very good driver at the moment. It's just that sometimes he makes mistakes, a bit too many mistakes, which Max doesn't make anymore."
