'Cautious' Red Bull sees tough battle: 'That’s part of the challenge'
- GPblog.com
Red Bull Racing is having its best season in years. The Austrian stable already saw Max Verstappen take the world title in Japan, while the team won the constructors' championship in the United States. Adrian Newey, meanwhile, is already working on next season, he stated in conversation with Red Bull.
The Austrian formation's top man discusses the budget cap, among other things, in the interview. Since Formula 1 teams have a spending limit these days, Newey says it is extra difficult to deliver a good car every year.
However, Newey is by no means running away from a challenge. "I think the development battle is going to be huge. But it’s a strange one because it’s a battle with one hand tied behind your back due to the cost cap," he reveals.
"The bottom line is that once you take away the fixed costs, the amount left to spend on development is quite restricted. That means that we have to be very careful to not do everything in a piecemeal way. But that’s all part of the challenge.”
Newey sees opportunities for progress
Because of the new regulations, Newey still sees parts of the car's performance that could be improved. Behind the scenes, he is therefore working hard to make strides next season. Red Bull will then have less time in the wind tunnel because of a penalty from the FIA.
