Not much has to happen for Pierre Gasly to have a serious problem. The Frenchman has now accumulated ten penalty points. If two more points are added, Gasly is automatically suspended for one Grand Prix.

At the press conference before the Brazilian Grand Prix, Gasly was naturally asked about it. "I am not going to lie, it's an unpleasant situation. It's a bit embarrassing in some ways as well, to be standing in a position I could be banned for a race after the season I've done. I don't feel like I've been particularly dangerous over the 12 months."

Long lookout

Well into next season, Gasly will have to watch out before any penalties dissapear. "There have been a lot of discussions with the FIA to find a solution. I want to do all the races, I want to finish the season in the best way I can for AlphaTauri. I want to do all the races in 2023 and perform for Alpine. A lot at stake because who knows what could happen in 2023, I could end up with an amazing car and fight for the championship, I can't take a risk to be banned and lose hopes for the championship."

Gasly talked a lot with the FIA: "The way the regulation is written is strict on the drivers even though it's not always dangerous driving. I do hope we continue more conversation today, and [not] end up in a silly situation where I'm banned for a race. It's not the correct approach. I can't go into next year with only two points and that risk, but at the same time no clear solution. Hopefully there can be a good plan for 2023."
