The number of overtakes in Formula 1 saw a big increase this year compared to 2021. This was revealed by Pirelli after the tyre test in Abu Dhabi.
Big increase in overtaking in F1
Following the Young Driver Test at the Yas Marina Circuit, at which F1 teams also took the opportunity to test Pirelli's new compounds for 2023, Pirelli reveals a big increase in overtaking compared to last year. According to Mario Isola, overtaking increased by more as much as 30 percent in 2022.
The Pirelli boss explained to Autosport.com that only 'proper overtakes' were counted and thus no positions gained through pit stops or DNFs were considered. Also, not everything where drivers overtook each other several times per lap may have been included. Nevertheless, the tyre manufacturer arrives at a percentage of 30 percent.
"I believe it’s a very good number, considering that it is informed by the facts, so it’s not exaggerated," Isola said. He attributes the increase to the new design of Formula 1 cars, which make it easier for drivers to follow and overtake each other.
