McLaren seemed to be one of the title contenders at the start of the season, but nothing was further from the truth. The team finished fifth in the constructors' championship and did not come close to a Grand Prix win. Nevertheless, Andreas Seidl is hopeful for the near future.

The team boss stresses that McLaren is in very good shape financially. Whereas Ferrari had to look closely at financial spending in early 2022, the British formation was able to work months ahead and thus develop the car throughout the season.

McLaren investing for future

However, the advantage did not put McLaren in a position where it could compete with the top teams. "We clearly saw this year that we had weaknesses in the team," states Seidl in conversation with Motorsport-magazin.com. "After the good work of all departments, together with the people from finance, we found ways to improve the team's performance."

McLaren set a clear path: more money needs to go to engineers in the future. The team has been investing recently and has already brought in several new forces to ensure McLaren is successful again by 2023 along with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

"We think it is important, along with the ongoing infrastructure projects, to take the next step as a team. That's why we started a big initiative a few weeks ago, bringing in a large number of new engineers."
