It has not yet been decided that the Spanish Grand Prix, held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will take place with or without the final chicane. A different layout is being looked at, but F1 and the organisers must decide make a final decision.

A Spanish Twitter account last week reported a new layout of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the Spanish GP. The final chicane could be removed to encourage overtaking. The final chicane on the circuit takes the speed out of it and makes it difficult for cars to overtake each other on the ensuing straight.

Layout without a chicane in Barcelona

It's not a certainty that Formula 1 will use the layout without a chicane in 2023. Speaking to GPblog, a spokesperson for the circuit revealed that the circuit will indeed have the layout approved with and without the final chicane. However, it is up to the organiser which layout will be used. At the moment, the circuit organisation has no further news about this.

So the ball is in the court of the organisers of the Spanish Grand Prix and Formula 1. If they want to use the layout without the last sector in 2023, that will be possible from this season. The typical last sector will thus disappear, but the chances of overtaking will increase considerably.
