Formula 1 drivers have to pay a tax each year for their super licence. The tax is calculated per point in the championship. Max Verstappen has to pay a hefty amount for last season after he set the record for most championship points in a single season.
Since F1 drivers earn a handsome sum, they have to pay a super licence tax. The money is used by the FIA to improve safety in the sport. Drivers driving at the top teams also tend to earn more than drivers further down the grid. So the more points you have scored during the season, the more you have to pay.
Record fee for Verstappen
ServusTV 's Sport und Talk programme revealed the super licence fees of some drivers. Helmut Marko confirmed during the broadcast that Red Bull Racing is paying the tax on behalf of Max Verstappen. In fact, the Dutchman has to pay off a whopping €963,800 after his successful season. This puts Verstappen way at the top of the list. Lewis Hamilton pays just over half that amount, at €514,400.
Title rival Charles Leclerc, who finished second in the drivers' championship, has to settle for 657,200 euros. Sergio Perez finished just behind the Monegasque and will pay a sum of 650,900 euros. For newcomers to the sport, the amount is a lot lower. Nico Hulkenberg, for instance, will have to settle 'only' the base amount of 10,400 euros, as will Oscar Piastri and Logan Sargeant.
