De Vries after training week in Dubai: 'Crucial to be physically strong'
- GPblog.com
Nyck de Vries is a guest on the podcast TauriTalk by AlphaTauri and in it he shared more about the different path he has taken in terms of training courtesy of his personal trainer. In previous racing classes leading up to his full F1 seat, training was less important, according to the Dutchman.
De Vries will make his Formula 1 debut next month as a full-time driver with the AlphaTauri team. He is training hard to prepare himself optimally for this debut. In searing hot Dubai, the Dutchman has completed a tough training camp with his brand-new trainer Pyry Salmela. In the podcast, the Sneek-based driver explained that training for Formula 1 involves a lot more than in the step-up classes he enjoyed before. "Basically my journey up until Formula 2, I’ve always been quite committed on training and I’ve always quite enjoyed training, always trained with a coach," he said.
After his Formula 2 championship, De Vries made the switch to Formula E, where he also became champion. In his own words, he missed the need to train because it proved less important in the electric class. "When I moved into Formula E away from Formula 2, Formula 1, the necessity of being fit just becomes less important and suddenly a lot of other things become more important in life. You just prioritise according to what is most important for the performance on track and frankly speaking in the past two, three years I’ve mainly been exercising how I like, joining gym classes for fun."
Crucial to be physically strong for F1
He also says that he has mostly been going to the gym and taking training classes over the past few years, purely for fun. "I mean I’ve always been active and training but never really with a routine so basically joining Pyry has changed that massively and I think that the importance of being physically prepared for Formula 1 is crucial, it’s not important it’s crucial."
