Domenicali defends FIA: 'We have a huge opportunity'

Stefano Domenicali stressed in an interview with The Guardian that Formula 1 considers it important that drivers and teams continue to speak out on social issues in the future. According to him, there is therefore no intention to restrict this.
In doing so, the Formula 1 boss pointed to the FIA's new rule, which states that teams and drivers must now ask for written permission before making a political statement. Although Domenicali understands the criticism, he expects the situation to play out differently in practice.
"F1 will never put a gag on anyone," Domenicali argued. "Everyone wants to talk so to have the platform to say what they want in the right way the better it is. We have a huge opportunity because of the position of our sport which is more and more global, multicultural and multivalued."

According to Domenicali, however, there are so many parties these days that it is important for the motorsport class to keep things under control. Indeed, different teams and drivers would have different ideas, which could make the situation confusing.
"I believe the FIA will clarify what has been stated," he continued. "I am sure the FIA will share the same view as F1 but they are part of an Olympic federation so there are protocols to which they have to abide."
