Full results | Eight dropouts in Australia, win for Verstappen
- GPblog.com
Max Verstappen has won the Australian Grand Prix for the first time. The Dutchman finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. See the full results of the Melbourne GP here.
Verstappen had to work hard for it, but finally managed to rake in his first win at the Albert Park circuit. The Dutchman kept Hamilton and Alonso behind, behind them it was chaos. Lance Stroll was saved by resetting the result. Indeed, he himself made a mistake on the final restart but was still awarded P4.
Points for the survivors
Carlos Sainz is the big loser. He falls back to P12 due to his penalty. The penalty is strange though, as Alonso just got the spot back and the lap was therefore not really counted. Many drivers are taking advantage of this. Sergio Perez ends his catch-up race in a handsome fifth place, followed by Lando Norris, Nico Hulkenberg, Oscar Piastri, Guanyu Zhou and Yuki Tsunoda. Valtteri Bottas grabs just short of the points.
In addition to the points grabs, all the drivers did not manage to cross the finish line and there are a lot of them. As many as eight drivers did not see the finish flag. For example, both Alpines spoiled their race by crashing with each other, Logan Sargeant ended Nyck de Vries ' racing and his own, and Charles Leclerc, Alexander Albon and George Russell crashed out earlier in the race.
