Sainz on Mekies departure: 'Is not that we are just losing people'

Laurent Mekies is the next to leave Ferrari. The 45-year-old Frenchman is moving to AlphaTauri to succeed Franz Tost. For Ferrari, it represents another setback after earlier technical leader David Sanchez also decided to close the door behind him. Carlos Sainz was asked about Mekies' departure in Baku.
At the press conference, with GPblog among others present, Sainz was asked how much Mekies will be missed in Maranello. "Well personally, because I can only take from my personal experience, I think he is a great guy. He has taken a step up in his career, so I can onlybe happy for him. I think obviously when you are offered such an important role, you have to take it."
Ferrari must recruit
So Ferrari needs to look for a new race director. Moreover, it is not the only vacancy yet to be filled in Italy. Sainz does not seem too worried. "We are also hiring staff, it's not like we are only losing staff. We are doing the best to restructure our team to make it stronger and I'm sure there's going to be people coming, people who will compensate for these last few losses."
He continued: "It's just sometimes the losses are quicker than what you manage to get back. But I'm quite confident in Fred's approach, the management and the way it is being handled, because I see good things coming."
