The sprint race phenomenon is a much-discussed concept in the Formula 1 paddock. The format has been criticised. This season there are sprint races at six circuits, but next year Liberty Media would like to expand this to 10 venues where a sprint race will be run.

In Baku, a new format around the sprint races was used for the first time. For the first time, there were two separate qualifying sessions: a sprint shootout and a normal qualifying session before the race. After the weekend, there was a lot of criticism of the new format, including from Max Verstappen.

More sprint races in the future?

Now Motorsport.com reports that there are plans to expand the number of sprint races even further, therefore. By 2024, there should be 10 sprint races. If the plan goes ahead, it is still unknown where these sprint races will take place. Circuits that want to organise a sprint race will most likely have to pay an extra charge compared to circuits that organise a traditional race weekend. This season, there will still be sprint races at five different venues. In these five weekends, we will see if the current format will still succeed.
