Rumors about De Vries' position don't affect Lawson
- Toby McLuskie
Liam Lawson is currently making a name for himself in Japanese Super Formula. The New Zealander won his second race in this class last weekend, capturing the first position in the championship. No doubt this reinforces rumours of a move to Formula 1.
Lawson is under contract to Red Bull Racing and could just be an option for a seat at AlphaTauri if it becomes available. That team believes Nyck de Vries needs to perform better. AlphaTauri has not said that De Vries has to fear losing his seat, but the fact is that with Lawson, there is a talented driver eager to step into Formula 1.
Best chances for next year
A short time ago, the talented Lawson told GPblog he knows what he needs to work on. Yet he too will have heard the stories about De Vries and his situation. In Japan, after the race he won, Motorsport.com asked Lawson if he is concerned with what is going on at AlphaTauri? "I want to finish the year and fight for the championship, and that will give me the best opportunity for next year. In terms of what’s happening [in F1]... it’s completely outside of my control. I am just happy to win today," he said.
Lawson also did not want to hear about being it a good timing for his victory, by which the journalist was referring to being in shape and De Vries not. Lawson reiterated that becoming champion in Super Formula is the only thing on his mind at the moment.
