'Our number one driver is the one at the front of the track'
The battle for the championship is between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez for now. Red Bull Racing managed to win every race so far, with three wins going to the Dutchman and the other two to his Mexican teammate. Still, the team does not have a permanent first driver, Christian Horner tells us.
After five races, the Austrian racing stable's drivers are only 14 points apart. Verstappen is first with 119 points, and Perez follows with 105 points. Despite being very tense in the championship, the Dutch driver did make a statement by winning the Miami Grand Prix from ninth place on the grid. His teammate started from pole position, but partly due to strategy, he was unable to counter a strong Verstappen.
Horner clear on first driver issue
The fact that Verstappen already has two world titles to his name does not mean that the team is going to put him above Perez, Christian Horner told the Extraordinary Tales podcast: "Our number one driver is whoever is ahead on the circuit. You earn that by what you do on the circuit, not through a contract. That is the way we have always operated."
