Alonso: "Didn't have any chance" due to Verstappen's super drive
Fernando Alonso did everything he could to take advantage of Aston Martin's strengths in the streets of Monaco but couldn't beat Max Verstappen. The Spanish driver finished second and therefore gave Aston Martin their best result of the season. In the interview after Grand Prix, Alonso admitted that his strategy couldn't beat Verstappen given the Dutchman's performance.
Alonso strategy
Alonso started on the hard tyres meaning his main focus was keeping Ocon behind at the start rather than attacking Verstappen. The Spanish driver explains the thoughts that Aston Martin had ahead of the race.
"We opted to start on the hard, so we gave up chances into turn one due to the short run. Wanted to play a long game with the strategy, but Max drove super well on the medium tyres by extending that first stint, so we didn't have any chance," Alonso said in a conversation with David Coulthard.
The rain created a challenge for Alonso, though he survived despite trying new slicks. Alonso gave his thoughts on the conditions. "No full power on the lap, braking was extremely fragile into Turn Five and 10. It was not easy. I was surprised there were no incidents or safety cars. Everyone did an amazing job to keep the cars on the track," he concluded.
