De Vries has 'unfinished business' at Le Mans: 'It's high on my list'
- Toby McLuskie
This weekend, Formula 1 has a break, but there is no need to be bored on the racing front. For it is the weekend of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race that Nyck de Vries hopes to one day put his name to.
De Vries did not have a perfect start to his rookie season in F1, but has shown in the Monaco and Spain Grands Prix what AlphaTauri expects from him: trouble-free race weekends with consistent results. If it is up to the Dutchman, he will stay in the king class of motorsport for the time being, which he managed to reach with much pain and effort.
De Vries wants to win Le Mans one day
Still, there comes a time after F1 for all drivers one day. Once the time comes for De Vries to leave the sport behind, he would not rule out a return to endurance racing. "I did a few Le Mans races in LMP2. Obviously fulfilling my dream [in F1] was my biggest dream, but I definitely have unfinished business there," says the AlphaTauri driver in conversation with GiveMeSport.
He continued: "I haven't had the chance yet to fight for Le Mans victory. That is something high on my list, which I would like to go and fight for in the future. I generally like endurance racing, I'm still continuing to watch it and I have a lot of friends who are in it."
For now, however, he does not dwell too much on his future after Formula 1. "I just love racing. I'm living in the present but F1 is certainly the pinnacle of our sport, and this is where I really want to be. I'll take it a step at a time. The future will kind of lead my way," De Vries said.
