It seems a matter of time before Lewis Hamilton has finally extended his contract with Mercedes. In that case, all the rumours about a possible switch of the Briton to Ferrari can be binned. Although Mika Hakkinen, himself a two-time F1 world champion, does not think this was an option for Hamilton.

In a video on betting site Unibet, the Finn says Hamilton no longer sees Formula 1 as a priority at all. "I know Lewis Hamilton's head is not 100% in racing anymore.
It's completely normal. But does money motivate? Yes, of course it does. But there are many risks involved."

'Priorities change'

At Mercedes, Hamilton is comfortable. A move to Ferrari would have meant settling in a new team first. "I think it's highly unlikely he will join Ferrari. I always say that when people get older, the order of your thoughts change. Your priorities in life change. Formula 1 won't be the most important thing anymore."

Hakkinen knows better than anyone how difficult it is to recharge for another season in F1 later in life. The Finn took a sabbatical in late 2001, but after only six months on the sidelines, Hakkinen decided to turn his back on Formula 1 for good.
