Qualifying duels after Canada | Verstappen and Alonso run out of teammates
In the mutual qualifying duels, Max Verstappen again increased his lead over teammate Sergio Perez in Canada. The Mexican did not progress beyond P12 in rainy Montreal. Lewis Hamilton was faster than teammate George Russell in Q3, bringing him level with his compatriot in the qualifying duels.
In a qualifying session where four drivers were penalised with grid penalties, these retirements caused shifts in the qualifying duels. Carlos Sainz finished in P8 ahead of Charles Leclerc, but his grid penalty means he will start from P11 on Sunday. The Monegasque will start from 10th place, winning qualifying over teammate Sainz.
Hamilton and Russell equal
We saw exactly the same thing at AlphaTauri. Yuki Tsunoda was faster in qualifying that Dutchman Nyck de Vries. However, the Japanese driver's behaviour was not deemed correct by the FIA, so he too received a grid penalty of three places. De Vries was thus better this qualifying session, and moves back a bit in the standings.
The Mercedeses are evenly matched this season. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell both had four wins over each other in qualifying on Saturday. Russell was leading 3-4, but Hamilton equalised yesterday with third time in their mutual duel. Watch all duels after qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix here.
