'Never had so much confidence in a team and project in my career'
- Cas van de Kleut
Fernando Alonso will not have regretted his switch from Alpine to Aston Martin for a second. The oldest driver on the grid seems to have been reborn, and with six podiums in the eight races run this season, it is also clear that his new team has made huge strides. Alonso expresses enormous confidence about Aston Martin's project to Motorsport.com.
Disappointing moves
The Spaniard became world champion in 2005 and in 2006 with Renault. After this, Alonso made many disappointing steps. In 2007, he finished equal to team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who was in his first season in the premier class of motorsport. After this, he returned to Renault, but this did not work out as well as his first spell with the team. At Ferrari, Alonso twice just missed out on the world title, and after a disappointing partnership with McLaren, the Spaniard left Formula 1.
Good return
In 2021, however, Alonso made a return to the Alpine team, and it soon became clear that the two-time world champion had not lost his touch with racing. As such, he picked up another podium in his first season with the team. Nevertheless, the Spaniard decided to switch to Aston Martin.
Week in week out, he is now competing for a podium spot again. The 41-year-old driver himself praises his team: "To be honest, I cannot remember another time in my career when I had so much confidence in a team and in a project itself."
