Marko on fastest lap Verstappen: 'Otherwise he can't sleep well'
- Sam Godber
Max Verstappen once again showed dominance during the race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. Although the Dutchman relinquished the lead of an F1 race for the first time since the end of the Miami Grand Prix, the Dutchman still had a huge lead over the number two. That lead was so large that the Dutchman was eager to make another pit stop for the fastest lap in the race, Helmut Marko arguing that Verstappen could not sleep well otherwise.
Marko jokes about Verstappen's wishes
The pit stop for the fastest lap was certainly not without risk. Indeed, the Dutchman re-entered the track only about three seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc. At oe24, Marko says it caused some nerves after all. "You could say that. A pit stop is always tricky. But Max didn't let himself be put off. Otherwise he can't sleep well. We let him, we also want our drivers to be happy."
Red Bull chasing McLaren record
Red Bull Racing has so far won all nine races in 2023 and if last year's last Grand Prix is added, the Austrian formation now stands at 10 consecutive wins. That is just one away from McLaren's 1988 record, but Red Bull's advisor is not concerned with that. "We are focusing on Williams' 114 wins. We can only achieve that this year if we win all the races," says the Austrian.
