It is an open secret that Nyck de Vries was about to commit to Maserati MSG Racing in Formula E before the season, but the Dutchman eventually opted for a seat with AlphaTauri in Formula 1. That adventure ended abruptly last week, so De Vries is back on the driver market. Speculation about where his future lies increases. Maserati is being mentioned as possible new employer for De Vries.

At the time of contracting the driver duo - this season consisting of Edoardo Mortara and Maximilian Günther - James Rossiter had not yet been confirmed as team boss of Maserati, racing last season under the name Venturi. That does not alter the fact that the Briton thinks highly of De Vries as a driver, he revealed during an exclusive interview with GPblog.

'Feeling sorry for Nyck de Vries'

On De Vries' forced departure from AlphaTauri, Rossiter says: "Well I think first and foremost, what happened to Nyck is incredibly unfortunate. I think not being able to showcase your talent for an entire season and clearly he was building on his pace. Everyone forgets Yuki [Tsunoda] has been there a long time and been doing a great job so I feel very sorry for Nyck first and foremost that he's been kicked out let's say he was at a point where it was about to start getting good for him. Bit sad for that to be honest."

Rossiter refused to talk about contacts, pre-existing or otherwise. Günther won an ePrix in Jakarta this season and also stood on the podium twice. Mortara is having a disappointing season. The Swiss achieved his best result of the season last weekend in Rome. He finished the second race through the streets of the Italian capital in fourth place.

Whether De Vries is an option? "Obviously as a Formula E champion he brings a lot of credibility and experience so he would be an exciting driver," Rossiter responded to GPblog's specific question.
