'Clarity on new F1 teams within six weeks'

FIA boss Mohammed ben Sulayem has given an update on the possible entry of new F1 teams. In an extensive interview with Hungarian FormulaHU, Ben Sulayem indicated that the FIA is currently busy with the selection process and hopes to give a definite answer within four to six weeks.
In recent months, it was already known that a number of teams have applied to the FIA. Among others, Andretti Cadillac and Hitech have repeatedly expressed their serious interest in joining Formula 1. FIA boss Ben Sulayem gives a brief update on the applications received: "I hope we can make an announcement next month. The applications are coming from serious parties and we don't want to refuse anyone without a very thorough assessment of such an application. The letter of intent and the contract with F1 clearly state that 12 teams are allowed to be active in F1. As FIA, we have worked very hard on the letter of intent and I think we can come out with a final decision within four to six weeks."
Ben Sulayem does express his preference for a new team to be car manufacturers. In his view, new brand entries are always good for the sport, but he is also keeping the door open for other interested parties. The FIA president makes it clear that interested teams should be allowed the opportunity, as long as they meet all the requirements and they are keen to strengthen the field of competitors. "If a team is interested in driving F1 and our rules clearly stipulate that we accept 12 teams, how can we say 'no'? I understand the concerns of the other teams, especially the financial part [the distribution of prize money], but I am in this position to do the right thing for the sport," Ben Sulayem said.
