Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner has given an update on Daniel Ricciardo's recovery. The Australian crashed in the second free practice for the Zandvoort Grand Prix, breaking his metacarpal. It was an unfortunate incident for the Honey Badger, but in a press moment, which included GPblog, Horner revealed how Ricciardo is doing.

Operation Ricciardo successful

Earlier, Ricciardo himself shared a brief update on his Instagram page. Team boss Horner gave some more details about the AlphaTauri driver's situation after the Dutch Grand Prix. "He had an operation earlier today. He's had several screws and a plate fitted. It went well. It was successful. The bone was broken in multiple places, but it was a fairly straightforward procedure," Horner said.

Horner cannot yet say too much about when Ricciardo will return to the cockpit. The Briton says the following: "Now it's all about recovery. We'll see. For a normal human being, that will be a couple of months. For a Grand Prix driver, it's often much shorter. We need to see how that recovery process goes for him".

So it seems unlikely that Ricciardo will get back in the car as early as the Italian Grand Prix. New Zealander Liam Lawson took Ricciardo's place during the race at Zandvoort and did so creditably, finishing 13th.
