Official: Hamilton and Russell extend contracts at Mercedes
- Toby McLuskie
All uncertainty has come to an end: Lewis Hamilton has extended his contract with Mercedes. The team just announced this. The seven-time world champion has signed a commitment until the end of 2025. Also, George Russell stays until the end of 2025 with the team.
For months Hamilton and team boss Toto Wolff had been telling them that a deal was coming. Yet it took a long time for both parties to agree. Rumours even surfaced that Hamilton could switch to Ferrari, soon debunked by the Briton.
Most successful driver in history
The now 38-year-old Formula 1 driver made his debut in the king class of motorsport in 2007. Hamilton has been with team boss Toto Wolff's team since 2013, and there he grew into one of the best F1 drivers in history. He has the most Grand Prix wins and thus took seven world titles. Only Michael Schumacher became champion as many times. Hamilton has never made it a secret that his goal is to take the title for the eighth time in order to overtake Schumacher once and for all.
Since the introduction of the new regulations in 2022, Mercedes has been trailing Red Bull Racing. Despite this, Hamilton thus maintains confidence that the German team is the best place for him to eventually win races and championships again.
