Sainz and Ferarri take P1 in FP2 at the Italian Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz has set the pace in FP2 at the Italian Grand Prix in a rejuvenated Ferarri car, giving the Tifosi something to look forward to as the weekend continues.
Heavy showers that hit the Dutch Grand Prix caused chaos throughout the weekend. But at the iconic Autodromo Nazionale Monza, a dry weekend is predicted, meaning teams and drivers collected vital data during today's practice session for qualifying and the race.
Stroll suffers early retirement and Perez beaches his RB19
After a very quiet and calm FP1 at Monza, a red flag came out just five minutes into the session, as Lance Stroll's Aston Martin lost power due to an electronics issue along the straight before the Curva Alboreto (previously named the Curva Parabolica).
Sergio Perez was unable to improve as the session came to its conclusion, becoming the second car to retire in FP2, as he crashed his RB19 at Parabolica and left the car stranded in the gravel trap.
Fearri show the home crowd some pace
When the session restarted after Lance Strolls early retirement, Ferarri set the early pace at their home Grand Prix, as Sainz was able to take advantage of the pace shown by the Prancing Horse on the medium tyres, taking P1 ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc, who also fitted the yellow-walled tyres to start FP2.
The Spanish driver was also able to set the pace with the soft tyres, beating out Norris into second place by only two-hundredths of a second, with Sergio Perez setting the third fastest time, as Max Verstappen could only place his Red Bull in P5, with no one else improving their times after Perez's retirement.
