Verstappen reacts to record: ‘Never thought this was possible’
Max Verstappen once again finished a Grand Prix in P1 in 2023, this time, it was his 10th race win a row. The Dutchman added another comfortable win to his name this season, as he faced no trouble at Monza once he overtook Carlos Sainz. He now has the most Grand Prix wins in a row in Formula 1, after breaking Sebastian Vettel’s record from 2013.
"Of course it's something you don't expect to happen. I never thought in the beginning of the season that something like this was possible," Verstappen began after adding another victory to his name in 2023.
He continued: "[I’m] very proud, but also just very happy with the race in general. We had good pace again. We could look after our tyres. It was quite a interesting little battle in the beginning to try and get a move into turn one, but we just didn't have the top speed to do so. So I had to wait for a tiny mistake or tiny lockup. And at one point Carlos had a little lockup, which made me have a good run out of turn two. And once I got in the lead I could just focus on my own pace. The car felt really nice to drive."
Verstappen also said that Red Bull need to enjoy these moments, because they don’t happen often in the sport. "I’m very proud of the whole team effort for the whole year already. What we are doing at the moment winning every race this year is something that we definitely are enjoying because I don't think these kinds of seasons come around very often. And that's the same with winning 10 in a row."
Whether Verstappen has already received a messages from Sebastian Vettel after he broke the German’s record is still unknown. "I haven't had my phone yet, so we'll check later," the defending champion answered.
