The qualifying session was red flagged early in Q1, as after only nine minutes Logan Sargeant was in the wall at Suzuka. The Williams driver's car had to be towed away, and he will have to start Sunday's race from P20. 'Qualifying beast' Nico Hulkenberg also failed to progress from P18 in Q1.

Liam Lawson, in the country where he has driven so many times in his career, finished 11th. It was announced earlier today that he does not have a Formula 1 seat at AlphaTauri for next season. The injured Daniel Ricciardo and Japan's Yuki Tsunoda do. The latter got into Q3, finishing in P9. Sergio Perez finished fifth in qualifying.
