After qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix, Logan Sargeant has had to drop 10 places on the grid for Sunday. Not only himself was penalised, but his team [Williams]. For the constructor, there was only a penalty as they left equipment in the pit lane.
The reason for the 10-spot grid penalty is overtaking AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda during the yellow flags of Q1. "The driver of car 2 [Sargeant] stated that he overtook car 22 [Tsunoda] because he seemed to be going slowly and also because he saw the green panel in front," the stewards said.
What else does the penalty mean for Sargeant?
Not only does the American have to start from last place, but he is also awarded two penalty points. If a driver gets 12 penalty points in one year, the driver will receive a race exclusion, meaning he will not be allowed to compete. As for Williams? The constructor will be fined 20,000 euros for leaving equipment dangling in the pit lane.
Sargeant and Williams were not the only ones to await a verdict from the stewards. The stewards also put Fernando Alonso, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, among others, under the microscope.
