Once again, Toto Wolff will leave a Grand Prix weekend with a smile on his face. Lewis Hamilton finished the race in second place in Mexico, and it seems like this time, Mercedes will able to take the trophy home with them.

"The smile on our faces is because the car was strong. I think, once Lewis was in free air, we had so much margin on the mediums, and that's why we were so good and got the fastest lap at the end. I think it wouldn't be anything, it was good," Wolff explained the reason behind his happiness to Sky Sports.

He added: "It’s been a few weekends now that we've been saying we could have, but we didn't. I think we need to qualify better, and then probably in straight line speed, it wouldn't have been so competitive against Max. But overall, the pace is there."

"I think it was at first that he said the car is actually good. But it was a brilliant, brilliant drive. We have these oscillations in performance. We don't really know, sometimes the tyres stick, sometimes not," Wolff also graded Hamilton’s performance.

What does this mean for Mercedes’ future?

Last season, Mercedes were only able to win once race at Interlagos. The Mercedes team principal explained what he expects from the Brazilian Grand Prix next weekend. "You know, if I'm too optimistic here, you know, only fools are optimists. So we’ll keep our feet on the ground, do the best job there in qualifying and the race, and hopefully we can challenge."

About next year’s car design, Wolff also said: "It does give us confidence. That's the kind of route we have been going. Now, we just need to end performance for next year."

On passing scrutineering

Wolff also had the opportunity to joke about Lewis Hamilton’s disqualification from last weekend: "Well, we’ll wait for the scrutineering. You find funny, you sure you’re supposed to laugh?" the Austrian team principal told Viaplay’s interviewer after the race.
