The forthcoming entry of Lola Yamaha is proof that the interest of manufacturers to participate in Formula E is growing. Japan's Nissan have been active in the electric class for years and has become the first manufacturer to commit to the period of the so-called GEN4. In the run-up to the E-Prix in their home country, the carmaker showed their commitment to extend their contract with Formula E for a further four years, and are active in the sport until at least 2030.

From the 2026 season, Formula E will take the next step in terms of electric car development. The next-generation GEN4 technology heralds a new era of electric racing power, with huge advances in energy efficiency, racing performance and safety innovations. For instance, the cars are going to have a regeneration capacity of up to 700 kW and an increased power output of up to 600 kW.

Nissan is the first of the current manufacturers to commit to Formula E for GEN4, with Tommaso Volpe, Managing Director and team boss of Nissan Formula E Team, saying: "Formula E is an incredible testing ground for new electric technology, and we can’t wait to continue to develop and compete until at least the end of Season 16. The team is on an upward trajectory, and our new headquarters will contribute massively to future growth, with advanced facilities helping us to develop our car for future seasons. A big thank you to Formula E Operations and to the FIA for their support - we’re very excited to continue working together.”

Important news for Formula E

For Formula E, the signing of the first manufacturer is important. "Nissan shares our values of promoting sustainability around the world, striving for the best automotive performance through electric solutions," believes Jeff Dodds, Formula E's CEO. "Having a truly global brand like Nissan, with great presence in every country we visit and beyond, is vital for us as a truly global championship. It not only helps us promote the series to a wider and more diverse audience, but also contributes enormously to promote EV technology worldwide. Nissan is a highly respected."
