F1 Today | Verstappen dominates, Wolff proclaims champion
Max Verstappen won the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix ahead of Sergio Perez by quite a healthy margin. The gap was so big, Toto Wolff has already claimed that after four rounds of this year's championship, the Dutchman has already won the title. Revisit the most interesting things that happened in F1 today.
Verstappen wins in Japan
There were no miracles in Japan. Max Verstappen survived the two race starts, and after he cleared Perez both times, he disappeared into the distance. While it was not enough to keep up with Red Bull this afternoon, but it was also a positive day for Ferrari. Carlos Sainz finished on the podium, and after giving Charles Leclerc a great strategy, the Monegasque driver could climb up the grid to finish fourth behind Sainz.
It was a mixed day for the Visa Cash App RB drivers. Yuki Tsunoda has finished in a solid P10 position, and for the first time since 2012, a Japanese driver has earned a point driving at Suzuka. On the other hand, Daniel Ricciardo's race ended on Lap 1, after he made contact with Alexander Albon and both drivers flew in to the tyre barrier. You can read our full race report here.
Wolff: 'No one can catch Max'
A striking statement from the Mercedes team principal, who saw the Dutchman win his third race in four Grands Prix this season. Moreover, he now only hopes for some highlights until 2026, when the new regulation change will be introduced. The two Mercedes drivers finished in P7 and P8 respectively in Japan, but Wolff also believes that this weekend was at least good for testing for the struggling German team.
Dads with dangerous jobs
Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz bonded over their dads' carreers after at the post-race press conference. Carlos Sainz Sr. is coming off of a victory at the Dakar Rally, while Jos Verstappen has also returned to rally. Both drivers are of course more worried about their fathers than themselves. While Sergio Perez's dad is very much into the sport, he is not competing. However, Perez jokingly said that still, his dad's job is the most dangerous, as he into politics.
