Have McLaren passed Red Bull in the development battle? Windsor answers!
McLaren seem to have made a good call with the upgrades introduced in Miami. Lando Norris managed to win his first race and was actually faster than Max Verstappen in the final stages of the race. Despite the good outlook for McLaren, Peter Windsor thinks Red Bull still have the better car.
Prior to the race weekend, it was announced that McLaren had brought as many as 10 new parts to Miami. It was therefore expected that the British racing team would make a move in terms of on-track performance. This did happen. In qualifying, Norris fell short, but during the race the Briton was very fast, resulting in a victory.
Have McLaren passed Red Bull?
During a livestream on his YouTube channel, Windsor is asked whether McLaren has now passed Red Bull in the development race. He answered, "I don't think they have. I think. Well, I've got to say, like everybody else, it's a bit early to say that. And this is one race where Red Bull didn't get it absolutely right."
Still, Windsor did praise Norris: "Lando benefited from all the variables that weren't in his control, say benefited, he maximised them and came out on top and won the race. And even in the last ten laps, it was quite difficult to make mistakes, quite easy to make mistakes in his position and he didn't. He was just beautiful. Head down and lovely, fluid driving, and that was wonderful to see."
