Windsor has a different view: 'Magnussen not guilty in crash with Perez'
- Corwin Kunst
Peter Windsor has a slightly different take on Sergio Pérez's crash than most. According to the analyst, Kevin Magnussen was not solely to blame. Therefore, the renowned journalist can understand why the stewards decided not to give the Haas F1 driver a penalty.
Who is guilty?
Windsor saw Chéco driving in the middle of the track, with Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg on either side. "Everybody's kind of blaming Kevin Magnussen. As I saw, he was on the right hand side. He was kind of following what the track was doing. Sergio Perez is in the middle, a little bit ahead of Kevin and then there's Nico Hulkenberg on the left. Basically three tried to go into two and who should have backed away?"
He continued: "Perez is obviously blaming Kevin saying he should have backed away but he was well on the right so all he was doing was just staying on the right hand side of the road. He actually hit the wall on the right as well as Perez so I think it's fair enough to say it was a first corner accident."
The impact of the crash was huge and fortunately all drivers came away unscathed. "It says a lot about the survival cell in Formula One. It says a lot about the barriers there as well and how well they did to protect marshals and bystanders going up the hill," Windsor said. Still, a photographer was slightly injured in the crash.
