- Ludo van Denderen
It was a difficult start to the season for Visa Cash App RB, but in recent weeks the team has been steadily racking up points. Especially thanks to Yuki Tsunoda, who has now collected 19 points. The Japanese ranks 10th in the world championship, between Aston Martin' s two drivers (Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll). Unexpected, as a year ago the green bolides were regularly on the podium.
Is it the Aston Martin team that is downwards spiral in 2024 compared to a year ago, or is it VCARB - Red Bull Racing's sister team - that have made a hefty step forward? In any case, Peter Bayer, the CEO of the Italian team is extremely happy with the progress made as well as the fact that Aston Martin seems to be within shooting distance.
"We had set ourselves the target of being on the top of the midfield and we kept saying that P11 is our pole position. Now, yes, our last upgrade from Miami, which was supposed to be presented in Imola, has allowed us to find performance. Both of the drivers seem to be confident in the car. But we've also seen that Aston Martin obviously brought a huge upgrade."
VCARB wants to go after Aston Martin
The coming weeks are going to reveal whether VCARB can really develop into a regular challenger to Aston Martin, or whether Alonso and Stroll can walk away from the Italians. "Clearly, all of us, the change of mindset really is to look forward," Bayer said. "To keep pushing and to challenge them, one after the other. So we'll try our best and fight until the end."
