Perez looking to improve after contract renewal: 'a lot of work to do'
- Cas van de Kleut
Sergio Perez and Red Bull Racing announced on Tuesday that Perez will remain with the team until the end of 2026. This coming weekend will see the Canadian Grand Prix, which is an important race for Red Bull, after three difficult weekends. Perez will want to perform well to prove exactly why he has been extended by the reigning champions.
Ahead of the race weekend, Perez spoke about his contract extension: "I am happy to be coming to Canada knowing I am staying with Oracle Red Bull Racing. It feels incredible to be trusted by the team to continue with them until 2026 and I am grateful for the confidence everyone has put in me. I know we have a lot of work to do in the coming seasons but, more importantly, in the short term."
Since the Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing hasn't dominated. McLaren won the Grand Prix in America. In Imola, Ferrari also joined in with upgrades, suddenly giving Red Bull competition from two teams. This was especially evident in Monaco, where Verstappen finished in sixth, and Perez crashed out after an incident with Kevin Magnussen at the start. Perez qualified in 18th and started in 16th.
Perez looking to improve
Perez must pick up the performances, and he admits Red Bull must improve: "We need to get back to the standards we were setting before Imola and get the car in a better window to perform on both Saturday and Sundays. While the race was a disaster in Monaco, we were in the wrong grid position due to poor qualifying and we need to solve that in Montreal. The team and I want to be starting at the front of the grid come race day and the aim is to make our lives a lot simpler this weekend."
