Horner answers question on Perez contract: why now?

Christian Horner explained prior to qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix why Sergio Perez's contract extension was specifically announced on Tuesday ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. The Red Bull Racing team boss addressed this question. That qualifying session, incidentally, did not go at all well for the Mexican driver, as he did not get beyond P16.
Horner on timing of announcement of new Perez contract
"Looking at the convergence in this championship, I think it's just important that everybody knows what their job is, everything is settled," Horner told Sky Sports. "Stability and continuity are important. Sergio has been such a strong and loyal member of the team over the last few years," said the Brit from Leamington Spa.
Red Bull Racing didn't win races in Miami and Monaco. The first was won by Norris, and the second by Charles Leclerc. Verstappen only won the Imola Grand Prix by seven-tenths. Horner sees Red Bull no longer comfortably winning Grands Prix. "The competition is going to get hotter in the second half of the year and therefore getting that distraction out of the way of him having to answer questions every week about his future which is always the right thing to take it off the table and focus on the racing."
