Horner slips up on Perez deal in Canada

News emerged this week that Sergio Perez has signed a new contract as a driver at Red Bull Racing. Christian Horner told Viaplay about the deal between Perez and Red Bull, but the Brit seemed to slip up here. Does Perez only have a one-year contract at Red Bull?

The headline news stated that Perez had extended his contract by two years. On the Saturday of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, it was also announced that Yuki Tsunoda will continue to drive at Visa Cash App RB (VCARB) for one more year. But Horner seemed to slip up during the interview he gave on Saturday.

Has Horner slipped up?

Asked if Tsunoda was ever in the picture at Red Bull as a driver, Horner replied. "They are all Red Bull drivers. We decided to extend Checo for one more year, but in the meantime we also wanted to exercise Yuki's option. He is doing great at RB at the moment. So yes, he will stay for another year."

Did Horner make a mistake? Does Perez only have a one-year contract at Red Bull? In any case, the Brit seemed to want to recover his statement quickly in the interview. "Well, 1+1=2, so it's a two-year contract. As with any contract, there is all sorts of things in it, but that is, of course, between the driver and the team."

Since the signing was made, GPblog has reported that Perez holds a 1+1 contract. The Mexican has been at Red Bull since the start of the 2021 season, and the team have won at least one world championship in every season since then. Perez did finish second in last year's Drivers' world championship, but his inconsistency was highlighted once again with a Q1 knockout this weekend.
