Mexican media critical of Perez after debacle: 'More worry than glory'

Sergio Perez is a true folk hero in Mexico and for years the local media have been holding their national media's hand. No matter how poorly the Red Bull Racing driver regularly performed, a bright spot was always found and presented to the fans. After another debacle, this time in the Canadian Grand Prix, the Mexican media are also highly critical.

In their review of the race, Reforma, one of the country's biggest newspapers, headlines that "Red Bull live in two alternative universes." "On one hand is Max Verstappen, getting over the shortcomings of the RB20 and taking victory in the Canadian Grand Prix," the newspaper writes. "The other extreme is Sergio Perez, with more worries than glory. As in Monaco, he leaves without points and in doubt about his poor performance."

'Perez from bad to worse'

Even Esto, who are known to be a fan of Perez, can't ignore it: "Sergio Perez from bad to worse, he is heading for his worst season in Formula 1," is the headline on the sports website. Esto then explains: "Checo's performance so far is the worst if we consider what he has performed in other seasons with Red Bull, after the same number of races."

After reporting at length that the crash was really Perez's own fault, the Mexican medium finally concluded: "In this way, a weekend came to an end that should be quickly forgotten, although it is often precisely from setbacks that you learn. A week that started fantastically with the news of his contract extension did not get a cherry on top after the debacle in Canada."
