McLaren have seen a vast improvement over the last 12 months. The team, which struggled in the first half of last season, has seen a complete transformation this year. Since China, they have consecutively featured on the podium. The Spanish Grand Prix looks to be another strong weekend for the team after Lando Norris finished first in FP1.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McLaren CEO Zak Brown reflected on the team's improvement over the last year: "The team's done a great job," he said. "We do have some bits on the car this weekend that are new, not many. I think we're now in a strategy of, because we're near the top, It becomes harder to bring out chunks of upgrades, drip feeding every weekend, some stuff here and there, just trying to keep pace."

The British team introduced 10 upgrades to Norris' car in Miami, which led him to win his first win in Formula One, and the first for the team since 2021. The following race saw Oscar Piastri also receive the full set of upgrades, and since then he has featured on the podium, finishing second in Monaco. Brown believes the improvements that the team has seen are testament to the hardwork of the McLaren staff: "The men and women at McLaren have done an awesome job. It just seems like everything they've done has worked as they said it would, and that's great. And it's getting tougher as we're near the front."

Could McLaren win the championship?

McLaren are currently third in the Constructors, behind Red Bull Racing and Ferrari. With their strong performances, they have been able to continue closing the gap between them and the teams ahead, sitting just 40 points behind the Italian stable. There is a gap of 88 points between McLaren, and Mercedes who sit behind in fourth. Nevertheless, following a strong weekend in Canada, Mercedes will also continue to get closer if their performance continues to improve too. For Brown and the team though, the focus is not solely on winning the championship: "The way Andrea leads the team, he's all about this weekend's performance, next weekend's performance. He doesn't say, let's go win the championship. That's not how he communicates with the team. He communicates with let's continue to push and the outcome will take care of itself."

"I think when you look at the points, Mercedes isn't that far back. They're not out of the race. Ferrari's, I think, 40 or so points ahead. And Red Bull, we've had the most points out of all the teams in the last three races. We're not racing with let's go win the championship. We're racing with let's try and win this race and then win the next one," he concluded.
