Verstappen happy with Red Bull after new win: 'Did everything right'
- Corwin Kunst
Max Verstappen had to buckle down hard for it, but for the fourth time our compatriot has crossed the line first in the Spanish Grand Prix (2016, 2022, 2023, 2024). The Red Bull Racing driver overtook Lando Norris at the start, laying the foundations for another win. As a result, Verstappen cannot help but be satisfied.
Without that start, victory would have been a lot harder, Verstappen explained to David Coulthard immediately afterwards. Because he not only grazed Lando Norris at the first corner, but also George Russell two laps later, he was able to manage his tyres a lot better. And that was crucial.
"I think what made the race was the beginning. I took the lead and then had a buffer in that first stint and could eke out a gap," said the reigning world champion. "After that we had to drive defensively. Lando and McLaren were very quick. I think we did everything well. I am very happy to win here. It was about managing the tyres. They get very hot around here so you are sliding around quite a lot."
Looking back briefly at the battle with Norris at the lights going out, Verstappen said, "It was a bit of rallying on the straight, I had to go on the grass a bit, which lost me a bit of a momentum."
